// Canberra United
Canberra United plays in the new Westfield National W-League which started in October 2008. In fact we are the only region to have a W-League team who doesn’t have an A-League side already up and running. The Capital Region has produced many fine footballers over the years. Our standout remains FIFA Ambassador and ABC Commentator Julie Murray. Julie not only represented Australia at many FIFA World Cups she also played professionally in Denmark and USA. You can hear Julie’s expert analysis every Saturday on ABC1 4pm when the live game is shown each week. The current Canberra United team has many Matildas, Young Matildas and local players in the squad. Caitlin Munoz, Lydia Williams, Amy Chapman, Thea Slatyer, Rhian Davies are just a few of our more experienced Matildas in the squad. And local Capital Football Club Pink Premier League player Cian Maciejewski (Weston Creek) has also made it into the squad showing a clear pathway for all our local players. Former Socceroo Robbie Hooker is the inaugural Canberra United coach. Robbie is also the Assistant Matildas Coach. And Matildas Coach Tom Sermanni is another former Canberran involved in the football at the highest level. Tom was a school teacher in Canberra before taking up his coaching career. A former Canberra Cosmos coach in the old National Soccer League, Tom with Robbie, recently took the Matildas to the second round of the FIFA 2007 World Cup. A first for Australia. Who can forget those games? Canberra United continues the proud tradition of women’s football in the region. Canberra Eclipse, under Coach Clive MacKillop, was champions in the old National Women’s League. And at junior level the growth of women’s football in Canberra continues to break records. With the United profile expected to encourage more girls and women to take up the sport, it’s a great time for football in the region. Canberra United aim to make a big impression on the field in their first season. Off the park they already have. United have strong sponsorship from CFMEU, ACT Government and ActewAGL. At least two Canberra United games will be televised on ABC1 this season, and all home games will be called and streamed live on 2XX 98.3fm Community Radio and we have already seen outstanding media coverage from the Canberra Times, and other radio and television media outlets in Canberra. It is an exciting time for football in Canberra. For more information on Canberra United, and to see the fixtures for this season go to http://www.canberraunited.com.au/. |
