// The Capital Region

The Canberra team will be a team that represents not only the city of Canberra, but also the surrounding southern NSW regional districts, which currently have no representation in the Hyundai A-League.

This includes the significant regional centres of Yass, Goulburn, Young, Albury, Wagga Wagga and the Shoalhaven Shire and the NSW Snowy Mountains (including Cooma, Berridale, Jindabyne).  This proposed territory captures a population in excess of 710,000 people.

The Canberra A-League bid committee aim to provide a team of which Canberra and Southern New South Wales can be proud.  From the Snowy Mountains to the South Coast, from the Southern Highlands to Albury/Wodonga; Westen Plains to the MIA; football is played in every town in our region.  With so many playing the game, so many watching, it is the most popular sport in our region.

The Capital Region has Canberra at its centre. And the region’s beautiful southern coastline, Snowy Mountains or surrounding regional centres give a diverse and wonderful feel to our communities.
The region is one of the nation's football strongholds, with over 15,000 registered players competing in Canberra alone. Thousands more play in Albury, Batemans Bay, Cootamundra,  Cowra, Griffith, Parkes and our many other towns.

Also offering a compelling case for a locally based A-League team is a region which embodies:

• The Nation’s capital
• A strong and vibrant regional economy
• A wonderful proven nursery of football talent
• Outstanding and widespread support for an A-League team across our region and beyond
• A pathway for players/coaches/referees/and administration staff
• Internationally renowned Canberra Stadium: Host of the 2000 Sydney Olympic (Football), Socceroos and Rugby internationals and plays host to regular Super 14 Brumbies and National Rugby League Canberra Raiders games.

The ACT has a strong football community, from junior players through to masters (over 35s), with a greater number of registered participants in the ACT than any other form of football with:

• Approximately 13,000 registered juniors (more than the other three codes of football combined)
• Approximately 4,000 senior men; and
• Approximately 1,200 senior women

There are almost 50,000 people in the ACT directly involved in football. This in addition to those fans and supporters of the game with no direct participatory involvement.

Canberra Football is also extremely well represented on the national scene through both the A-League and national teams (men's and women's, senior and junior).
